Update on little Nate

Hi everyone! It's been about a week since I posted anything, so thought I'd update you on our lives. Nate is doing well, but is teething like crazy. I am just hoping that his little teeth take a break for Christmas since we will be out of town and out of his normal routine. He already has a hard time sleeping when we're not at home, so add teething pain to this and it doesn't seem very relaxing for mom and dad or poor baby Nate! However, we are really looking forward to seeing the Vargas side of our family, it has been over two months since we've seen them and Nate has so many things to show them! Dad Vargas has been through a lot this year, and I know he is really looking forward to our visit, and we are equally as excited to get down there and spend some time with all of them. I'm just hoping that Nate will be "nice" to everyone, he sure has been a bit cranky lately...

Last night my sister Lori and her family came by to drop off presents from the rest of my family and pick up the presents from us. Nate could not have been more rude. He didn't even smile for her, even ignored her! He smiled for his cousins who had to get their "Bay Nay" kisses before they left...but Aunt B got snubbed. Sorry Lori!! (And for those of you wondering why we call Lori "Aunt B", it is kind of a long story, but derives from her childhood nickname of "Beezer", which came from her middle name "Beth", etc. Our dad loves to create nicknames and this one just stuck...so when Jenni had the first child of our family, it was decided that Lori would be Aunt B and I would be Auntie M.) But I digress.

So Nate has had a bit of a behavior problem of late. He is not so bad yet, I just worry about how much worse it will get before he gets better. He hits, slaps, bites, head butts and is starting to use his voice a bit more to express his frustration. He mostly does this to me, but occassionally to DJ too. DJ has a look that he can give Nate that makes him stop automatically, but somehow I can't convey the same ominous look! So that begs the question....How in the world do you discipline a one year old? He doesn't understand time out...believe me, I've tried it! He doesn't understand consequences yet and just keeps pushing our buttons. All we can say is NO and redirect him, which is quite frustrating for us. I know he is just upset and frustrated that he can't express how he's feeling in words, and I try to be as soothing as possible after he has gotten in trouble. But I don't know what is getting through to him and what is going way over his head. Please pray for me to have lots of patience, because this is one difficult stage we are in right now.

All the same, I wouldn't change anything in the world. Life is good, even with all the complications and frustrations. So, Merry Christmas to you all and please take a moment during this holiday season and really thank God for your family and everything you have been blessed with this year. We are always thinking about what we don't have and what we want, and not appreciating everything we do have. It's almost a new year, so enjoy the rest of this one with those that you love. "And God bless us, everyone." Sorry....stole that from a Christmas Carol!! :)

And we're walking.....!!

Yes, I do find it hilarious that the name of this post is also a line from one of the funniest Progressive commercials out there. I like to make myself chuckle sometimes! But seriously....NATE IS WALKING NOW!!!! It was bound to happen soon, he has been cruising around for a while now holding on to whatever he could to support himself. But somehow it still shocked us when he took those first few tentative steps all alone! It was awesome. This happened two nights ago, and we are still amazed to see him toddle a few steps and then plop down on his bottom! So cute! And now our lives change again. We'll be chasing him around for the next couple of years...better get our running shoes on!

So "baby Nate" is now "toddler Nate"...although I will never call him that. We are in a very interesting and amusing stage right now. Troubling sometimes, yes. Temper tantrums, picky eating, and mood swings galore. But so amazing at the same time. It is just awesome to watch him discovering new things every day. He is so into his toys right now! For the first time he is actually interested in them. I'm sure he will be more interested in the wrapping paper and boxes at Christmas, but he will probably entertain his toys a bit longer than he has before now. It will be so fun to watch him cruising around! We can't wait to show him off to his family in San Marcos!!

Reunion fun!

Brother-in-laws rooting for opposite teams....uh oh!

Great Grammie holding Baby Nate

So this Thanksgiving we were able to get together with my mom's brother and his family. It has been over 15 years since all of the cousins were ALL together, and guess what folks?? There's only 5 of us! How is it that hard to get everyone together in the same place? Location, location, location. Melisa lives in Michigan, Jenni lived in North Carolina for years, and Carin, Lori and I have been in Texas, but far apart from each other. Texas is a big state, y'all!! And now that we are all married and have kids it will just get harder to get us all together. But for one afternoon, it happened!! DJ and I finally got to meet Dylan, Carin and Rusty's son who was adopted last year. And we all got to meet Baby Henry, Melisa and John's 6 month old cutie! Of course they hadn't met Nate yet either, so it was a great time. But mostly, we all got to introduce our new sons to their Great Grammie A. Our Grammie lives in an assisted living facility in Amarillo now, and she doesn't like to travel much...it is really hard on her at 87. But we convinced her to come and I think she is very happy that she did! I have posted some pictures of this momentous (for us anyways!) occasion. And some other pics from Thanksgiving as well. Enjoy!
And once again, these pictures are out of order and I can never get my message to appear before the pictures. Oh well. :)

Nate's party and Thanksgiving

Here are some pictures from Nate's party. I don't know why I couldn't get them in order, so they are in reverse order here. So I'm technology challenged!! Oh well....

Lori's banner that she made for Nate. It says "Baby Nate Turns 1!"

Daddy, cake is GOOD!!!

And after!!

Before he dug in to his little cake.....

Hello everyone! Can anyone believe that it is almost December?? Tomorrow is December 1st!! Where did this last year go? It just seemed to fly by. We had such a great Thanksgiving weekend and were able to get so much accomplished. We had a great Thanksgiving meal, did some fabulous Black Friday shopping, threw Nate's birthday party and had a small family reunion....whew!! I'm still tired! Wish I could post ALL the pictures, but I'll post what I can.

We really missed seeing the Vargas side of our family, but we look forward to spending Christmas with them again this year. It will be so great to show off all of Nate's skills, and by then he may be walking by himself, who knows??!! Anyways, we want to send the Vargas family our love and let them know that they were missed. This was DJ's first Thanksgiving away from his parents, and it was hard for him. But it will make Christmas all that much more special, and we can't wait!

Nate's Birthday!

Enjoying his birthday cake and not too sure about his hat from Aunt Christy!

Ok, I know I'm way late with this post. But give me a break...I was SICK! :)

We celebrated Baby Nate's first birthday last week, on Tuesday 11/16/10. The night before we were feeling so many different things....disbelief that he is already one, joy that he is developing so well, happiness that he has had minimal problems, sadness that a year has already gone by and our baby is getting so big!! And many other things. We laid in bed the night before his b-day thinking back to that night we went to the hospital. The excitement, fear of the unknown, anxiousness to get it over with and meet our son. We went over the events of the night in detail..."remember how my mom just barely made it in time to see Nate coming out?", "remember how they had to work on him for a few minutes because he had the cord around his neck?", "remember how tiny and squirmy he was and how he had that squeak in his cry?" and so on. It was such an amazing night and early morning, and we wanted to remember every detail. Hopefully as time goes on we will still be able to remember those first few moments with him that were so special. We are so in love with Nate, and treasure every minute we have with him.

So Happy Birthday, Nate! We love you so much and are so proud of you. Get ready for this weekend with your party, Thanksgiving, and our little family reunion...it will be lots of fun and we will be celebrating you all year!

"How cute am I, Daddy?"

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a Spooktacular Halloween weekend like we did! Baby Nate went trick-or-treating with his cousins up here on his "Davis side". He had the cutest little Pooh bumblebee costume that his Nana got him, and he didn't mind wearing it at all! We took the head part off towards the end because it was a little warm, but he didn't complain the whole time! And he sat in the wagon with his cousin Bryson for most of the night, except for a few blocks when mommy and daddy held him. Baby Nate sure did bring in a LOT of candy for us to enjoy!! :) Boy....some people really go all out with their decorating for Halloween. But my favorite is the picture of the "graves" of the Rays, Yankees and Giants that someone put in their yard!! May not happen for the Rangers this year, especially after last night's game...but it sure was some creative Halloween decorating. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Baptism

This picture was taken after the reception...he was SO tired and enjoying "Uncle Polanco"!

The light that shines in all of our hearts....we can never let it go out!

Us with the Deacons

Well, we finally had Nate baptized this past weekend. It was such a wonderful service, done by Domingo Vargas, Sr. (aka Dad, aka Pepo). His homily was so great and personal, from the heart, and we will remember his words for a long time. DJ and I are so lucky to have the family that we have. All of my immediate family came (except for Bryson), and all of DJ's immediate family was there as well. My uncles both came, we were just missing my Aunt CiCi. My Uncle Mike did a reading, and also was able to participate in some other things in the service. My sisters Jenni and Lori each got to do a reading as well. DJ's uncle Peter allowed us to have the reception at his house, and it was very nice. His uncle Johnny smoked the brisket for us, and even got up at 3 am to get it started!! Again, we are so very lucky to have such a wonderful family!

Brisket, sausage (from Lockhart!), beans, potato salad, and a delicious cake....YUMMY! We are so thankful for all of our friends and family sharing this beautiful day with us. Nate behaved wonderfully, of course. He is such a good baby! I do know that eventually his behavior will change, and he is definitely starting to have separation anxiety when someone other than mommy or daddy wants to hold him in a big crowd! But for as many people that he had around him he behaved very well!

So....thank you to all who came and celebrated Nate's special day with us. We love you all. And to those who couldn't make it, we love you too! The important thing is that Nate is now on a journey with the Lord, and we intend to be there with him every step of the way. Love to all!

10 months and counting!

Happy 10 months, Baby Nate! We joke that Nate will always be called "Baby Nate" because all of our family calls him this. But I'm sure that when he's in Kindergarten he will make us put a stop to it! We'll see....regardless, he will always be my baby. I am so incredibly blessed to be his mommy, and I can't wait to see what his personality will be when he gets a little older. Although, judging from his already forming personality, he will be sweet, funny and a little ladies man!! :)

Have a great day everyone, and say a little prayer in thanksgiving for Nate on his 10 months in this world!

Another update on our lifestyle change

Well....it didn't go as well as I'd hoped. We did lose weight, just not what we wanted. There are many excuses I could insert here, but I'll save it. We just didn't do the work! I lost only 5 pounds total. Lost some, gained some, lost it again. But I'm still hanging on to my 5 pounds! And I don't plan to gain it back, even with the impending holiday season looming around the corner! DJ probably lost about 10 pounds too. We just need to work out. That's all it comes down to. We haven't been eating badly, in fact we're pretty darn healthy! We've been shopping at Sprouts and buying mostly fresh food. It's just finding the time and energy to actually work out. The motivation is there for both of us....we want to be healthy for Nate and to be good examples for him!

Ok, enough wallowing. We can do this! And now that the weather is cooler it will be much more pleasant to go on walks. We will do it!!!

On a Nate note, he has a little cold right now, but is doing very well. He is so happy most of the time...except when you're trying to get him to sleep! I did discover that children's benedryl will knock him out, so I will use it sparingly. He does not like meat or beans right now, but we're going to keep trying. He loves all fruits and likes a few veggies. Not a big fan of peas anymore, or green beans. Oh, we went downstairs last night to hang out with our neighbors who have a little boy who is almost 11 months hold, he's a little over a month older than Nate. Their son, Sam, kept trying to sit on Nate! Nate was a good sport, and just smiled and laughed, but Mandy and Ben were mortified that their son thought our son was furniture! Sam is a sweet kid, just not used to socializing with babies smaller than him. He kept taking toys away from him too. Nate was very sweet though, I'm sure he will make lots of friends in his lifetime! Ok, back to work! Love to all!

Teeth

This post has been a long time coming. I still need to download pictures, but our most exciting news is that Nate finally has some teeth! He got his first one in a couple of weeks ago, but now he has two bottom teeth and one coming in on the top! We are anxious for our next checkup at the doctor's office, next Monday the 16th. I think Nate probably weighs at least 20 pounds now, and he has been eating baby food, cereal, and those little puffy gerber snacks they make in a ton of different flavors. He watches us eat everything and is SO ready to eat dinner with us! If only he had more teeth and wouldn't choke on the soft stuff I've given him! Ahhhhh well.

Nate's baptism is scheduled for September 25th in San Marcos. We're still working out the details, but it should be a good time! Hopefully we'll get a trip to Amarillo planned soon, I'm really feeling "homesick"! I haven't lived there in 14 years and haven't visited in almost 2 years. But I do miss it, and Nate really needs to meet his Great Grammie A! Alright....more later. Must get back to work now! Love to all.

Weekend "funny"

Maybe one of these days I'll get some new pics posted here...that would be nice, huh? It just takes my old computer a really long time to download the pics and then upload them on here...this is me whining about time again!!

This weekend (actually, starting Wednesday night), we had our nephew Stephen in town visiting. He watched Nate all day Thursday and Friday (don't worry...he's almost 24 and pretty mature!) and he did a great job. No emergency calls at all! We didn't do much this weekend...just ran some errands on Saturday. Here's the "funny" story from the weekend...

We went to Lowes because Stephen works there and he wanted to get us something for our apartment. So we get there and I notice Nate needs a diaper change. I take him to the ladies room and get him on the changing table. Boy...this was a STINKY and disgusting diaper! And Nate is now at the stage where he will not lay still for a diaper change...he is constantly trying to turn over and it amuses him to no end that we are always flipping him back over and scolding him! This is happening now in the Lowes restroom, only the changing table is very small and I have to leave my wipes in my diaper bag which is hanging just behind me. I was getting him wiped, and he rolled over while I was reloading. So I pick him up to turn him back over and notice that his shirt is wet...soaking actually. Then I see that the whole changing table is wet...covered in PEE! He has peed all over the table, his changing pad, his shirt, and now it is on me because I picked him up! I still hadn't gotten all the poo off and now there's pee everywhere! So I have to take his shirt off, he's naked now, and I put him in the sink (at LOWES) to rinse him off. Of course there's no soap in the dispenser!! But there was an amused lady in one of the stalls listening to me talking to Nate and laughing about what's happening. (BTW, did she offer to help me? NO!) I finally get him rinsed off and realize I have no backup outfit for him in my bag. Rookie mistake. Man, this is a nightmare!! Now I have a naked baby, still need to wipe off the table before I put him back down and get a new diaper on him. This is extremely difficult while holding a wet, squirming, naked baby! UGH. Finally I get him dressed again, minus shirt, and take him out to the boys (who have called during this time to find out where the hell I am!). DJ was totally embarrassed by Nate's "white trash" appearance, and I was mortified that we had made such a mess in the restroom, which I did try my best to clean up. Wow, now I smell like pee and poop because there was no soap in the restroom. Great...and we still have to go get groceries before going home!!

What a great time. One that will cause me to make sure to pack extra clothes for every outing. I guess every mom has to have one of these moments. Oh, and we did stop at Old Navy and bought Nate a shirt before heading to the grocery store. Did I get a new shirt? Nope. Oh well! Till later... ;)

Update on New Lifestyle....

Ok, so it has a week and a half now and DJ and I have been eating really well. The "diet" part of our new lifestyle is working out great! I'm not going to lie and say that we have cut out all of the sugar and processed food...but we have cut out the majority of it! And you just have to treat yourself every once in a while, right? Well, these two food-lovers do!

As for the "working out" part of our lifestyle change: not so good. We are TRYING to get some kind of work out in as often as possible. But with our hectic schedules and this awful summer heat, it's been a challenge to say the least! We just can't subject Nate to the treacherous heat every day...his body temp skyrockets just like mine and after only a minute or two he's covered in sweat. So walking in this heat is out of the question as long as it's in the 100's. I lost 3 pounds the first week...probably mostly from cutting out the majority of my daily sodas and drinking a lot of water. DJ is doing well too, although we're not sure exactly how many pounds he's lost because our scale at home is too unreliable. (I get to use a scale at work that is more reliable.) Hopefully I will have lost a couple of pounds this week as well. We both feel better, so I guess that's all that matters, right? Anyways, that's what's going on in our world!

Nate is back at the babysitter's, and is doing great! He's got one tooth on the bottom that REALLY wants to pop out, but it's not quite there yet. He does get a little fussy in the evenings sometimes and I just assume it is from teething pains. We've got some teething tablets that seem to give him some relief. And if he's really fussy, we give him a dose of tylenol and that seems to work well too. Oh, and the big boy is quickly outgrowing his 6-9 month clothes and getting into his 9-12 month stuff! I'm about to have to clean out the drawers to make room for the new size! Tomorrow he turns 8 months....WOW! Time is going by way too quickly. Love to you all! :)

A New Lifestyle.....

Today is July 5th. Today marks the first day of the University of Texas at Arlington's Summer Slimdown Contest. I joined a team of 5 of my coworkers for this weightloss competition, and we weighed in today. Today I learned that I weigh 174.2 pounds. I'm throwing it out there for everyone to know....because I am going to change this!!! Of course I am not doing this without DJ...I had to make sure he was on board before I agreed to join this team, which we named "The Biggins"!! Today we will start moving and cut out all the crap! I am going to try to lose 25 pounds in 6 weeks.......crazy? Yes, I know. But it's really not THAT much, is it? For my height, I would still be overweight even if I lost 25 pounds. And I will go for more later. Today I am feeling positive and hopeful. Today is a good day. We'll see how tomorrow goes!!!!

Someone tell me....

How do you change your background on these blogs? I tried doing it once, but it didn't seem to work. Now the new one flashes in front of the old one for a second, but the old one always stays. I want to change the look of this blog, but need some help!! :)

Surprise, surprise!

For those of you who didn't know this, DJ's mom and two of our nieces have been staying with us all this week to watch Nate while the babysitter is on vacation. Next week my mom comes to stay, so we are super blessed to have such great family! This morning at work I got a text from Jessica, our niece. She said she was in Waco with Chuuuuuuuck (her boyfriend whose real name is Curt), and could they come surprise Nana and the girls and come see Nate? OF COURSE!! So they started driving and got here around 3:30 or so. Stopped by DJ's work to surprise him, then came to the apartment to surprise Nana and the girls (and Nate!). What a great surprise for them and a good time for all of us! Yes, our tiny apartment is a little crowded, but it is worth it for us all to be together.

Tomorrow is the RANGERS game! My mom, dad, sisters, brother in laws, and all the kiddos are going to the Ballpark in Arlington to enjoy a game. And we're taking the girls, Amie and Jamie, to their first Rangers game. Since I work in Arlington I will just meet them at the ballpark and Lori and family will be bringing DJ and the girls. We're all really looking forward to it. Maybe I'll even get a "hoooooootttttttttddddddddooooooooggggggggg!" If you've ever been to a baseball game, you get that reference....

As the week draws to a close, we are sad to see Nana and the girls (and Jessica and Curt) go. But we are also looking forward to my mom staying with us for a week. Every once in a while, a girl just needs her mommy! And I don't get to spend much time with her when she is here, so I'm looking foward to a whole week! But we will miss all of the spoiling Nana has done, we are so blessed to have her in our lives. She is the BEST!! Ok, that's it for now....goodnight! :)

Father's Day and other stuff

It occurred to me today after I talked to my good friend Adriane that I have let some momentous events pass by without blogging about them. So I thought I'd catch you all up on what's been going on in our household!

At the end of May we took a trip down to San Marcos to see DJ's family. Our niece Jessica graduated from UT in May, and boy did they ever have a party for her!! It was so great to see all of the Vargas family, and meet lots of relatives Nate and I had not met before. And I met Christopher's girlfriend and we took so many pictures that I really need to post, and we just had a ball. As usual, the time was too short but we had a blast. Hopefully we'll get back down there to get the boy baptised soon!

Last week (on the 16th), Nate turned 7 months old! I know I keep saying this, but I am just so flabbergasted by how quickly he is growing up. My little baby is changing so much and becoming a big kid...or at least in my mind he is. DJ and I joke all the time about how he's soon going to be leaving us for college....and it's actually true! Time flies so fast, it's unbelieveable.

Anyways, so at 7 months he is sitting up very well on his own, grabbing objects from EVERYWHERE, rolling, rolling, rolling...still no crawling....drooling a lot (still no teeth), loving his feet and playing with them all the time, talking a lot, and has recently started making a new sound familiar to me from my nephew Bryson: the "huuuuuh, huuuuuh, huuuuuuh, huuuuuuh" sound when he is frustrated or bored or otherwise unhappy. An example of him grabbing random objects...the other day I looked over at Nate as he was playing in his exersaucer and he was chewing on something and grinning at me. As I got closer, I discovered that he was happily gnawing on a popsicle stick! Choking hazard??!! HECK YES!!! I asked DJ, "How did he get this??" DJ sheepishly said, "I don't know...I must have left it on the coffee table." He had eaten a fruit bar and left the stick out. No more leaving things out unattended...we must be diligent now!! Man, babies have a knack for spotting random objects and grabbing them before you even knew it was there. YIKES!!!

So, as we all know it's been HOTTER THAN HELL in Texas this summer. And we're barely even into summer....it's going to be a long one! We decided to start taking Nate to the pool so he can get used to the water...I really want him to be a strong swimmer and confident in the water. Even though it was really hot, and it was late in the afternoon so Nate was super tired....he LOVED it! He splashes with his arms and grins so big...and just loves when we twirl him around and around! I'll try to post a video soon of his first time at the pool, it was a blast! We've taken him a couple times now and he really likes it.

DJ had a really great first Father's Day. He was able to spend all day with his wife and baby boy, and we savored every moment. I cooked him a yummy breakfast (huevos rancheros and bacon), we went to the pool, he got to play his video games, Nate and I took him to Texas Land and Cattle for a steak dinner, and then we watched a movie after Nate went to bed. Well, part of a movie that is...I never seem to be able to make it through a whole movie in the evenings anymore!! I'm so lame now. :) Ahhhh, oh well.

For me, summer has been really hectic at work with freshman orientations every week. Nate's babysitter is off for the next 2 weeks, so we have our moms coming to watch Nate during the day while we're at work. This Saturday DJ's mom (Nana) is arriving, bringing Amie and Jamie, our nieces. We can't wait for them to get here! We're going to have so much fun just hanging out, eating Nana's cooking, and then we're taking the girls to a Rangers game on Friday evening! Nate can't wait to see his cousins and Nana. :) Then my mom will take over the next week. My parents are also arriving this weekend, although they are not staying at our apartment. It's Ramsey's 5th bday this weekend, so they're coming to celebrate. They'll be at Lori's place all week, then she'll come here next Sunday. We're looking forward to her staying with us too...she always helps me get stuff done around the apartment that I haven't found time to do. Little tedious things that I hate doing...she somehow motivates me to get it done! Plus I just really miss my mommy! It will so good to be around her, and I'm sure I'll get used to the luxury of having our moms here to help us with Nate.

Ok, it's late now (and by late I mean 10:16 pm!!) and I'm turning into a pumpkin. More soon! Love to you all!!!

Phone-filled weekend

This weekend, we house/dog sat for my sister Lori and her family. Since I have been promising DJ an iPhone for a while now and next weekend IS Father's Day, we decided that we would go to the AT&T store on Saturday and bite the bullet. And don't you know, Saturday morning at 4 am, DJ knocked over a glass of water and killed my phone too. Not only did I lose my beloved blackberry (aka crackberry), but I lost all my phone numbers too!!!! UGH. So we had to shop for 2 phones. This reminds me....if you're reading this, I probably need you to send me your phone number(s) because I need to replace all of them!! My new phone is ok, but it is not the same and I really miss my blackberry. It magically came on yesterday and I got all excited....then I discovered that the phone thought it was March 2, 2006!!! Yikes, it was only out of service for a little over 24 hours, so I don't know what was the deal with that!

SO...we got our phones and then went over to Stonebriar Mall for a bit. DJ ended up buying me two new shirts and some pants for work, so BONUS for me!! Gotta love MACY's and their awesome sales!! And Nate got some shorts and a new bathtub...he outgrew his a while back and we just kept using it...legs hanging off and all! Nate loves his new bathtub ducky! And he looks adorable in it. Needless to say, DJ has been absolutely glued to his iPhone since Saturday. I can just picture Thanksgiving Day...all the boys lined up on the couches playing on their phones, occassionally looking up at whatever football game is on! Boys and their toys.....
Ok, so here are some pics of Nate in his new tub. Enjoy!

A few more pictures!

Here are some pics of Nate we took recently. He is getting so big. But he is so much fun! He's gotten so squirmy lately, it's really hard to hold him and diaper changes are quite challenging! But it's worth every frustrating moment, and we wouldn't trade it for anything. Enjoy!
I'm going to reach that remote, Mommy!

Jumping is FUN!

Do I have something on my face?

I love my exersaucer!
